Abstract :

The Tzamplakon family is one of the best known lineages of the Palaeologan period: several of its members are mentioned in Ioannes Kantakouzenos’ Memoirs, some archives of Mount Athos deal with the family, and the testament of the megas stratopedarches Demetrios Tzamplakon has been preserved. These sources make it clear that the Tzamplakons were an important land-owning family, close to the imperial power. Despite those documents, the history of the family, its genealogy and the development of the family estate remain little studied. A new analysis of the sources and a new edition of Demetrios Tzamplakon’s Testament, translated into French, clarify many uncertainties and help us understand the attitude of aristocrats confronted with the shrinking territory of the Empire in the 14th and 15th centuries.
