Abstract :
The verbs kunnen, zullen, mogen, moeten and willen (comparable and partially cognate to English can, shall, may, must and will/want) constitute a closely knit unit whose interrelatedness and opposition can be defined by means of a series of (logical) operators. It is furthermore argued that the contents of the verbs similarly to the nominal concepts in E. Rosch' prototype theory, show an internal structure with a pronounced kernel and more peripheral aspects, the latter of a so-called modal nature.
