Arthur Roche, the newly appointed Archbishop Secretary of the Sacred Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, gave the second annual St Bede Lecture on 14 July 2012 at Ealing Abbey. Commenting on a line from Sacrosanctum Concilium, he affirmed that the liturgy is a privileged occasion for the transformation of the quality of life of believers. Such a personal transformation is not merely a product of individual piety and devotion but properly belongs to the assembly gathered in the power of the Spirit and inheres in the celebration of the Church’s liturgy itself. Assembled communities must again be helped to perceive in the liturgy the divine presence transforming the quality of life, a presence which may sadly be neglected when the community is turned inward, distracted by its own performance of a liturgy becoming earthbound and heaven-bereft. Liturgical renewal throughout history has often called the liturgical assembly back to its identity as the body of Christ and to their affective involvement and spiritual engagement with the person of Christ present in the liturgy. Le Très Rév. Arthur Roche, l’archevêque récemment désigné comme secrétaire de la Sacrée Congrégation du Culte divin et de la discipline des sacrements, a été chargé de la seconde conférence annuelle S. Bède, le 14 juillet 2912, à l’abbaye d’Ealing (Londres). Commentant un passage de Sacrosanctum Concilium, il tînt à affirmer que la liturgie est une occasion privilégiée d’une transformation de la qualité de vie des croyants. Une telle transformation personnelle n’est pas tant un produit d’une piété individuelle et de dévotion mais appartient proprement à l’assemblée réunie dans la puissance de l’Esprit et se veut inhérente à la célébration de la liturgie de l’Église elle-même. Les communautés rassemblées doivent à nouveau être conscientisées à mieux percevoir dans la liturgie la divine présence transformant la qualité de vie, une présence qui peut être fortement négligée quand la communauté se fixe sur elle-même, distraite par ses performances d’une liturgie attachée aux biens terrestres et privée du céleste. Le renouveau liturgique a régulièrement appelé à travers l’histoire l’assemblée liturgique à redécouvrir son identité comme le corps du Christ, et son attachement affectif et engagement spirituel avec la personne du Christ présente dans la liturgie. |
