Abstract :

The Second Vatican Council was a turning point in the life of the Church, one based on a paradigm shift in the relationship of the Church to the world. Theology in general, and catechesis in particular, have taken account of this transformation. In Latin America and the Caribbean the reception of the Council was highly dynamic, in the face of difficult historical situations. In this context, the Latin American Conference of Bishops, which met several times, played a decisive role in a way that was somewhat different from anywhere else. By examining the trajectory of the conferences of Medellín (1968) and of Aparecida (2007), this article seeks to highlight a number of transformations in particular as regards catechesis. It identifies a number of important steps along the path taken, in the light of the reception of the Council. We describe the genesis and development of the topic of ‘catechesis’ between the conferences of Medellín and Aparecida, by way of those of Puebla and Santo Domingo, referring as well to events in the intervening periods. By way of conclusion, we offer a number of challenges for catechesis in view of an evangelization at the heart of the world.
