Abstract :

The question of causality in Malebranche has been analysed widely, as well as the difficulty of making it compatible with the affirmation of human freedom. As the foundation of every free act the existence of a certain activity of the mind is then presupposed. Now the latter deserves to be discussed and questioned. Firstly, it appears to us that Malebranche concentrates it in the act of free will. Thus we take seriously the physical model of matter at rest or in movement by means of which he explicitly thinks freedom or sometimes the will itself as a force of the mind. We examine this analogy in its entirety in order to determine all of its implications as well as its limits.
