Abstract :

The nature of Husraw I's (531-579) reforms has been the subject of a great deal of controversy. A primary question remains the extent power of the ancient 'feudal' families, specifically the great Parthian families, in the post-reform period of Sasanid history. Recently Rika Gyselen has discovered a set of seals belonging to various spāhbeds assigned to the four 'quarters' of the Sasanid realm after Husraw I's reforms. We shall argue in this introductory study that the seals of Wistaxm and Šahrwarā testify to the continued and substantial power of the great Parthian families of the Ispahbadān and the Mihrān in the post-reform period of Sasanid history.
