Journal: Orbis Volume: 34 Date: 1985-1987 Pages: 173-186 DOI: 10.2143/ORB.34.0.2013016 Abstract : The following account is based upon work which forms a part of a synchronic study of the dialect of Farnworth and district. Farnworth is a municipal borough in the Greater Bolton area, and is situated three miles south-east of Bolton, seven miles south-west of Bury, and nine moles north-west of Manchester. It is part of a vast area of population in what was formerly south-east Lancashire, and there is currently a wide variety of industries there. In the past, however, the traditional industries were textiles and mining, and a consideration of historical, geographical, social, economic and cultural factors shows the Greater Bolton area to be a peculiarly homogeneous unit under the urban field influence of Bolton. This unity is reflected in the speech of the area, which is relatively homogeneous in character, and distinctive vis-à-vis that of other areas. The speech with which we are concerned here is the traditional vernacular of rge area, as used in free-speech interviews in the 1970s. |
