Journal: Orbis Volume: 34 Date: 1985-1987 Pages: 167-172 DOI: 10.2143/ORB.34.0.2013015 Abstract : Compared with some of the other Romance languages, the tonic vowel system of Standard Friulian is more complex. The crux of the problem is that Friulian, both the standard variety and that of the Rivignano dialect, contains not only a series of short vowels, but also a series of long vowels. This is a situation that is not often found in the Romance languages. The problem of the classification and interpretation of these long vowels has been the source of quite a bit of confusion. The problem has not been adequately dealt with. This study will review some of the previous attempts at description of the vowel system, including a reanalysis of the existing data, additional data from native speakers, and the formation of new conclusions concerning long vowels. Also included is an overview of the vowel system of the Rivignano dialect and its inherent problems. |
