Abstract :
In a relatively small geographical area, such as that to be examined here, phonological differentiation among local varieties often takes place at the level of phonetic realization only. Thus the dialects of Surrey, Kent, and Sussex share a single underlying vowel system, and the local varieties tend to be distinguished by differences in the frequency with a number of allophonic types realize each phoneme.
