III Journal: Orbis Volume: 35 Date: 1988-1990 Pages: 81-97 DOI: 10.2143/ORB.35.0.2012828 Abstract : Mans is a Celtic language closely related to Irish and Scottish Gaelic. It became extinct in 1974 but is still of interest to linguists as a source of historical and comparative data. When it died, it was moderately creolized with many English, Latin, and Scandinavian words and constructions, and Manx phonolgy was heavily influenced by Norse and English. Unfortunately, little phonological work has been done in the study of Manx. This article presents a very basic generative phonology of Manx with data taken from recordings of native informants made in the 1940s and 50s by the Irish Folklore Commission and the Manx Museum and from an already existing historical phonetic study. |
