Document Details : Title: Tone and Analogy in British Citizen-Names Author(s): SHAW, Philippe Journal: Orbis Volume: 35 Date: 1988-1990 Pages: 33-54 DOI: 10.2143/ORB.35.0.2012825 Abstract : In this article a description is given of five types of derived British and Irish citizen-names, each with its own stylistic and derivational characteristics, and the examples found are listed. Then certain general features of this class of words are presented, in particular various characteristics of 'tone' (non-denotative elements of their meaning and formal features related to them - style, affectiveness, institutionalisation, prominence). Finally I discuss the most interesting point for wordformation in general, which is the interaction of classical proportional analogy and the template principle, to which the issues of tone and prominence can be related. |
