Document Details : Title: De Formulae vitae honestae in het Middelnederlands Subtitle: Een bibliografisch wespennest Author(s): BEJCZY, István Journal: Ons Geestelijk Erf Volume: 78 Issue: 1 Date: Maart 2004 Pages: 23-28 DOI: 10.2143/OGE.78.1.2005680 Abstract : In modern bibliographies, considerable confusion exists between the Middle Dutch versions of three different texts: (1) the Formula vitae honestae of Martin of Braga, (2) the Formula vitae honestae of Pseudo-Bernard of Clairvaux, (3) the Speculum monachorum of Arnulph of Bohéries. At present, only one Middle Dutch adaptation of (1) can be identified – the verse translation in Jacob of Maerlant’s Spiegel historiael – whereas Dutch variants of (2) are known from four manuscripts. These figures are surprising, as (1) was by far the more popular text during the Later Middle Ages in other vernacular languages as well as in Latin. As for (3), the Middle Dutch versions mentioned thus far in scholarship are in reality translations of David of Augsburg, De exterioris et interioris hominis compositione. This article points, however, to the existence of a hitherto unknown Dutch version of (3) in an American manuscript. |
