One would not expect, therefore, to meet enlightened opinions in Dutch literary works originating from the South during that period. Arnold Geulincx and François van den Enden, two philosophers with an Antwerp background and an enlightened reputation, emigrated to the Dutch Republic as early as the seventeenth century. One may well ask if their opinions influenced authors in the Austrian Netherlands, given the fact that both must have had a network of friends and pupils in the South who were closely allied to them. |
