Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 46 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2004 Pages: 289-298 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.46.3.2004778 Abstract : Two waves of refugees, the first as a result of the revolt in the sixteenth-century Netherlands and the other following from the French religion policy in the next century, led a number of francophones to the Republic. They would go on to play an important cultural role all over Europe, together with some Dutch inhabitants. They did so by means of a varied periodical press: newspapers, by the end of the eighteenth century also political papers, journals of learning modernized by Pierre Bayle, spectatorials introduced by Justus van Effen, society magazines and so-called mercurials. Other contributions were made by translators, a champion of tolerance like Bayle, publishers and booksellers, a philosopher like François Hemsterhuis, satirists, narrators like Belle van Zuylen and historians like Jean Le Clerc. |
