Abstract :

Uncertain Adriatic. Austrian captains, barbaresque privateers and Ottoman sultan around 1800
When peace was reigning for many years between the Habsburgs Empire and the Ottoman Empire, several dozen flying Austrian flag merchantmen were captured in the years 1797-1800 by Barbaresque privateers although Sultan’s subjects. These heavy incidents were enough quickly settled, the crews released and the ships as the cargoes given back or indemnified. However, this matter, at first sight of minor importance, offers the opportunity to draw the attention to some essential components of a Mediterranean world in full recombining in the last years of the 18th century, notably: the new maritime power which is henceforth the Austrian Empire; the recovery of privateering in the Maghreb and its practices; the diplomatic relations between the Austrian Empire and the Ottoman Empire; the measure of the real authority the sultan exerts on the outlying provinces of his empire.
