Abstract :
With reference to the theme of this conference, I would like to show how the Palmyrene luxury trade offers us a unique glimpse into the abusive political-economic system of Rome alluded to in the Satyricon and rebuked so vehemently in Revelation 18. It is my contention that the architectural remains and other artifacts from Palmyra, along with a number of Palmyrene texts, provide a remarkable – and neglected – illustration of the circumstances that provoked the language of condemnation found in the Book of Revelation.
