The great majority of deaf children remained not only illiterate, but also did not acquire the oral language of their family. These children probably lived through a poor system of communication, which consisted solely of a limited form of homemade sign language. We have some written records about exceptional deaf persons in those times, but no records remain about the life of ordinary deaf people. The experiences of deaf children with no formal education in modern oral societies, however, could be able to shed some light on how their lives might have been. |
