Document Details : Title: The Spirit of the Lord, or the Wrath of the Lord? Subtitle: Ezekiel 39,29 Author(s): LUST, Johan Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 78 Issue: 1 Date: April 2002 Pages: 148-155 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.78.1.589 Abstract : Ez 39,29 is the last verse of the long episode in which Ezekiel deals with the eschatological battle featuring Gog of Magog (38–39). In MT the verse provides the episode with a hopeful ending. According to the NRSV it reads as follows: “and I will never again hide my face from them, when I pour out my spirit upon the house of Israel, says the Lord God”. The text then continues with the description of the new temple and the new Israel (40–48). In LXX, however, there is no trace of the pouring out of the spirit at the end of the Gog pericope. The Greek reads as follows: “and I will never again turn my face away from them because I poured out my wrath over the house of Israel, says the Lord”. This is intriguing, especially when one takes into consideration that in the earliest Greek Manuscript of Ezekiel, chapter 39 was followed, not by chapters 40–48 and the description of the new temple, but by chapter 37 with the scene describing the gift of the spirit to the dry bones. |
