It shows that there is both profound continuity and “progressive development” in his theology of the Holy Spirit, from the early 1930s to the early 1990s. The article illustrates how Congar’s early pneumatology was shaped by his systematic approach to ecclesiology and points to the influence of St Thomas Aquinas, Marie-Dominique Chenu, Johann Adam Möhler and Ambroise Gardeil. The Second Vatican Council is identified as the decisive influence on Congar’s developed pneumatology. The article recognises Congar’s magnum opus on the Holy Spirit, Je crois en l’Esprit Saint (1979-80) as a Catholic monument in ecclesiology. |
