Abstract :
This article reflects on Congar’s contribution to dialogue with the East, an important element of his ecumenical heritage. It explores four main areas: first, Congar’s personal pilgrimage into Orthodoxy; second, his valuable diagnosis of differences of approach between East and West; third, the background to the mutual estrangement between both sides; fourth, how both sides could be enabled to grow closer by “breathing with both lungs.” This paper is part of a wider movement for renewed dialogue with the East based on “a better knowledge of history and openness to the truth of others.”
