Document Details : Title: Religion in Bulgaria at the Beginning of the XXIst Century Author(s): PETEVA, Jenia Journal: European Journal for Church and State Research - Revue européenne des relations Églises-État Volume: 7 Date: 2000 Pages: 279-298 DOI: 10.2143/EJCS.7.0.565591 Abstract : Discontinuity has been an inherent characteristic of the attitude towards religion since the establishment of the Bulgarian State. Unlike characteristics of the political and constitutional system of the modern Bulgarian State, however, the fundamentals of the legal and social status of religion enjoyed longer periods of stability. For the most part Bulgarian legal history reveals moments of relative religious tolerance but also negative interference of the State in the autonomy of confessions. That interference was particularly in the sources of financing, and it mostly affected the Bulgarian Christian Orthodox Church. |
