Document Details : Title: An unknown Ruusbroec Letter in Willem Jordaen's Latin Subtitle: Found in an East-Prussian Manuscript in Cambridge Author(s): SCHEPERS, Kees Journal: Ons Geestelijk Erf Volume: 75 Issue: 1 Date: Maart 2001 Pages: 32-68 DOI: 10.2143/OGE.75.1.565520 Abstract : This article presents a critical edition and translation of the newly found eight letter of John of Ruusbroec (1293-1381). It was discovered in a fifteenth-century East-Prussian manuscript, now Cambridge, Corpus Cristi College MS 526. The letter was written in Latin by Ruusbroec’s confrere Willem Jordaens, and was sent to someone exercising spiritual direction over a group of devout men and women, probably in Southern Germany. The article argues for accepting the authenticity of the letter both on internal and external evidence. The letter shows numerous important similarities with essential aspects of Ruusbroec’s mystical teachings in his treatises. An attempt is made to trace the origins of the Elbing collection, to which MS 526 belongs. An extensive description of MS 526 concludes the article. |
