Living in a structural, institutionalize community which is the Church, law plays a vital role in shaping and guiding that community toward realizing its ends of faith, fellowship and procession into the Reign of God. At the same time, it always remains a danger to exaggerate the role of law in communty life. While this is appears to me clearly evident in respect to something like sacramental and liturgical practice, in which the danger of 'over-regulation' might lead to repetitious and stilted ceremonial, it becomes crucial when the area being adressed by (canon) law involves that part of life that would be considered 'ethical'. |
