Journal: Louvain Studies Volume: 24 Issue: 2 Date: summer 1999 Pages: 147-170 DOI: 10.2143/LS.24.2.542142 Abstract : The reception of the Second Vatican Council, especially in the light of the 1985 extraordinary Synod of Bishops in Rome, could be described as positive. Commentators are agreed there can be no going back on the teaching of Vatican II and that this teaching has been well received by the people of God. I believe this to be the case with the documents of Vatican II with one possible exception – namely the Declaration on the Relationship of the Church to Non Christian Religions (1965). This declaration was one of the last and shortest decrees to be issued by the Council. Its shortness, however, belies its significance. |
