Document Details : Title: Interconnections in Glyptic Art During the Neo-Assyrian Period Author(s): TROKAY, Madeleine Journal: Ancient Near Eastern Studies Volume: 33 Date: 1995 Pages: 96-112 DOI: 10.2143/ANES.33.0.525752 Abstract : During the Neo-Assyrian period, from the end of the 8th century B.C. onwards, documents were sealed with stamp seals in addition to cylinder seals. It is hypothesized that contact with foreign countries, in the second millennium B.C. led to the introduction of the stamp seal in the region where cuneiform script was used. During this period scripts other than the cuneiform, either alphabetic of hieroglyphic, were developed. The alphabetic scripts were used by West Semitic peoples: Hebrews and Phoenicians in the Mediterranean countries and Arameans in inland Syria; the hieroglyphs were used by the Hittites and Neo-Hittites in Anatolia and North-Syria. |
