Document Details : Title: Babylon or Persis? Subtitle: A Crux of the Behistun Inscription Author(s): BIVAR, A.D.H. Journal: Iranica Antiqua Volume: 33 Date: 1998 Pages: 187-194 DOI: 10.2143/IA.33.0.519205 Abstract : One of the episodes narrated in the Behistun inscription of Darius the Great of Persia (521-485 BC) is the rising of Persis (Pars) of a rebel named Vahyazdâta. A widely accepted interpretation of this inscription associates the success of the forces of Darius in Pars with the reinforcements from Babylon. Yet consideration of the military situation involved suggests that a version naming Babylon at this point is not a likely one. This article evaluates these different interpretations. |
