Journal: Iranica Antiqua Volume: 33 Date: 1998 Pages: 155-172 DOI: 10.2143/IA.33.0.519203 Abstract : Love of colour in architecture, applied art and textiles is everywhere apparent in what survives of the handiwork of the craftsmen employed by the Achaemenid kings and their courts. Some of the most spectacular examples of this workmanship are to be found among the jewellery they produced. Its imagery and morphology have long been the concern of students of ancient jewellery, but much less attention has been paid to the general cultural implications of the raw materials used and of the techniques employed in its manufacture. The recent publication, with unusually detailed technical studies, of Achaemenid polychrome jewellery in the Shumei Family Collection, presents an opportunity to reappraise the origins and characteristics of this type of jewellery, which has long been regarded as an hallmark of Iranian art from an early date. |
