Journal: Iranica Antiqua Volume: 33 Date: 1998 Pages: 43-56 DOI: 10.2143/IA.33.0.519122 Abstract : In 1961 a systematic archaeological survey in the Elburz mountains in Iran revealed the site of Marlik Tepe. The systematic excavation of the site uncovered thousands of objects of which many golden, silver and bronze. This ancient culture was particularly advanced in its metal industry and thus of major importance to the history of the region. Since the excavation report was published a discussion rose on the cultural background of Marlik and the derivation of the name of the site. This article discusses these issues in detail. |
