Document Details : Title: Rev. A. Leskien, Handbuch der altbulgarischen Sprache Author(s): SWIGGERS, P. Journal: Orbis Volume: 40 Date: 1998 Pages: 346-347 DOI: 10.2143/ORB.40.1.505068 Abstract : Of all of August LESKIEN’s [1840–1916] writings, his Handbuch der altbulgarischen Sprache is the one that has become a true classic. The book was reedited four times before LESKIEN’s death, and a sixth edition followed in 1922. In 1955 a seventh edition appeared, containing a number of minor corrections and additional bibliographical references. In 1962 a new edition was published; it was prepared by Prof. Dietrich GERHARDT and Prof. Johannes SCHRÖPFER. This eighth edition contained a useful appendix to the syntactic section, an extremely useful index, and synoptic tables for phonology and morphology, as well as two maps (taken from Francis DVORNIK, The Slavs. Their early history and civilization, Boston, 1956). The tenth edition, reviewed here, was supervised and prepared by Prof. Johannes SCHRÖPFER, who wrote a new preface (pp. XIV-XXV) outlining the importance of Old Church Slavonic for general Slavic and Indo-European studies, and who updated the bibliography (pp. 352-360). |
