Document Details : Title: Het gedicht 'Goya als Hond' (1999) van Stefan Hertmans: een analyse Author(s): KONST, J. Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 46 Issue: 1 Date: 2004 Pages: 49-75 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.46.1.504894 Abstract : In 1999 the Flemish poet Stefan Hertmans (°1951) published ‘Goya als Hond’ [Goya as a Dog], a long poem which is inspired by the painting ‘The Dog’ (Madrid, Prado) by Francisco de Goya. This article offers an exhaustive analysis of the poem in light of Goya’s so-called Pinturas Negras [Black Paintings], the famous cycle (1819-1823) to which ‘The Dog’ belongs. It argues that in ‘Goya als Hond’ Hertmans proposes a plea for the resolutely ambiguous interpretation and flexible evaluation of unknowable reality. |
