Document Details : Title: The End of the Road for the Indo-Greeks? Author(s): SELDESLACHTS, Erik Journal: Iranica Antiqua Volume: 39 Date: 2004 Pages: 249-296 DOI: 10.2143/IA.39.0.503898 Abstract : The chronology and history of the Graeco-Bactrians andIndo-Greeks is still utterly confused. O. Guillaume has thoroughly citicised the hypotheses based on vague numismatic evidence, raising important questions of methodology in historiography. The author reevaluates some of the conclusions drawn on the basis of Greek and Indian witten evidence. Particular attention was given to onomastic information, as this is crucial for a proper understanding of the text. It turned out, however, that hardly any conclusion can be stablished with some amount of certainty, even when the information of the written sources is combined with that of numismatics and archaeology. |
