Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 44 Issue: 1 Date: 2002 Pages: 42-62 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.44.1.375 Abstract : One can examine a seventeenth century drama not only with respect to poetical or thematical characteristics but also as a product on the cultural market, particularly in the case of plays performed in the Amsterdam Theatre, which attracted a large audience. When considering Geeraardt Brandt’s tragedy De veinzende Torquatus [The pretending Torquatus] and its model, Aran en Titus by Jan Vos, the question arises which conditions favoured or impeded the combination of literary recognition and theatrical success in the period between 1638 and 1645. In this respect the following elements require investigation: the choice and handling of the subject matter by the author (more in particular the use made by Vos and Brandt of the successful formula of the classicist revenge tragedy), the crucial role of the theatre directors in respect of the choice of repertoire, the availibility of protectors of literary or social importance (Caspar Barlaeus in the case of Vos and Brandt), as well as dedications and laudatory poems in the text editions. For both Vos and Brandt literary reputation resulted in social standing. |
