Document Details : Title: Het Nederlandse renaissancetoneel Subtitle: een literair-historische lacune en een poging tot invulling Author(s): MEEUS, Hubert Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 44 Issue: 1 Date: 2002 Pages: 14-21 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.44.1.371 Abstract : In 1964 Smit proposed to fill the lacuna in the knowledge of the genesis and the evolution of renaissance drama in the Low Countries with objective research on a number of formal characteristics. The Antwerp Centre for the Study of Renaissance Drama has realized his concept in two genre studies, which proved that it was impossible to make a purely objective inventory of the formal characteristics of renaissance drama in the period between 1575 and 1650. In addition it showed that no two plays had the same set of characteristics, which made it nearly impossible to classify them by genre. The formal multifariousness made it clear that the contents, the historical context and literary influences have to be drawn into the research to be able to answer Smit’s question. |
