Abstract :
How was mathematical intuition considered during the 1920s and the 1930s in Germany? To answer this question, this paper examines ‘Aryan mathematics’ and the journal Deutsche Mathematik, both of which were promoted by Ludwig Bieberbach. In particular, I focus on the image of mathematics advocated by Bieberbach and the concrete mathematical research configurations dealing with line arrangements, developed by Bieberbach’s student, Eberhard Melchior, to show how Melchior’s research may have been influenced, even if partially, by such images of mathematics. The paper demonstrates that there were various conceptions of mathematical Anschauung and visualization during this period; nevertheless, it also shows that the particular research configurations reflected such conceptions only to a certain extent.
