Far from being a minor aspect of his commentary, such a statement proves to be an essential part of his philosophy of mathematics. In Aquinas’ view, the notion of imagination enables mathematical knowledge to be explained not only in its genesis but also, and above all, in its application and practice. As regards mathematical knowledge, this contribution intends to shed light on how a medieval view on the role of the imagination in mathematical activity provides valuable elements to understand the epistemic role of diagrams. It aims to bring an unsuspected source for the history of the philosophy of mathematics such as Aquinas’. |
