Document Details : Title: Location of the LXX-Proverbs Subtitle: A Reappraisal Author(s): CSALOG, Eszter Journal: Journal of Septuagint and Cognate Studies Volume: 57 Date: 2024 Pages: 109-123 DOI: 10.2143/JSCS.57.0.3294337 Abstract : The location of LXX Proverbs have been the subject of debate for a long time, and as such, it is important to examine new aspects of the circumstances of its formation. This paper deals with issues that are of particular concern in the LXX text, including the prominence of charity, which is more stressed than in the MT. For instance, MT 22:9 has a triple translation in the Greek text, and upon comparison with analogous passages in the Sophia Sirakh, it becomes evident that while in the latter, mercy and benevolence is presented in relation to sacrifice, in the text of Paroimai it manifests as a valuable act in itself. Additionally, it is noteworthy to observe the instances in which the text advocates obedience to the king and offers the benefits of peaceful civil life. This message already present in the Hebrew text is given greater emphasis in the Greek version. When considering the political events of the second century BCE in the Ptolemaic Egypt, it is reasonable to conclude that the translation originated in Alexandria. |
