Journal: Journal of Septuagint and Cognate Studies Volume: 57 Date: 2024 Pages: 29-46 DOI: 10.2143/JSCS.57.0.3294332 Abstract : The paper is based on a full collection and analysis of the matches of b- to the Greek rendering in the LXX-Pentateuch. The aim is to test further the hypothesis that renderings of prepositions in the Pentateuch are determined by context and natural Greek usage alone. It was found that less than half the renderings of b- match Greek ἐν. The other renderings are: another preposition; a case; or a word, phrase, or clause incorporating the meaning of b-. Analysis of the meanings of ἐν indicated that the instances of interference amount to approximately 5% of renderings of b- by ἐν, and 2% of all kinds of rendering of b-. The conclusion is that in the case of b-, renderings were generally determined by context and natural Greek, except for a small minority of cases. |
