Document Details : Title: Using Values and Norms to Explain the Rationality of Rejecting Probabilistic Proofs Author(s): CZOCHER, Jennifer A. , DAWKINS, Paul Christian , WEBER, Keith Journal: Logique et Analyse Volume: 261 Date: 2023 Pages: 19-40 DOI: 10.2143/LEA.261.0.3293133 Abstract : A hallmark of mathematical practice is that theorems are accepted exactly when someone produces a deductive proof vetted by their peers. As Fallis argued, mathematicians insist on deductive proof even though there are situations in which non-deductive methods can provide mathematicians with equal or greater confidence in mathematical claims than deductive proofs can provide. In this paper, we use the sociological constructs of norms and values to give an account of why it is rational for mathematicians to insist upon deductive proofs. |
