Document Details : Title: Stephanus Vinandus Pighius, un humaniste accompli Author(s): NATIVEL, Colette Journal: Humanistica Lovaniensia Volume: 72 Date: 2023 Pages: 157-171 DOI: 10.2143/HLO.72.0.3292716 Abstract : This essay surveys the life and works of Lipsius’ friend Pighius, and pays special attention to his contributions to ancient chronology and history, epigraphy and especially iconology. An analysis of Pighius’ dialogue Themis dea (1568) makes it clear that Pighius was an innovator in the field of iconography: using a philological method, he tried to discover the allegorical meaning of representations found on ancient works of art. |
