Document Details : Title: Lost Testimony of Friendship Subtitle: Ioannes Dantiscus' Poetic Letter to Cornelis De Schepper Author(s): SKOLIMOWSKA, Anna Journal: Humanistica Lovaniensia Volume: 72 Date: 2023 Pages: 93-102 DOI: 10.2143/HLO.72.0.3292712 Abstract : Ioannes Dantiscus’ correspondence includes several letters dated in 1535-1536 mentioning two lost poems next to each other. One of them is Oratio filii prodigi, considered missing by Dantiscus’ poetry editors. The second one is a piece until now ignored – referred to as: carmina amicitiae, epistula ex vetero Helicone. The fact that Dantiscus and Cornelis De Schepper were humanist friends is well known and documented in their abundant correspondence published within the series Corpus Epistularum Ioannis Dantisci. The lost poem is also mentioned twice in this volume but has been ignored by the editors, who wrongly suspected these references alluded to Dantiscus’ poetic autobiography. Only a thorough examination and collation of all the mentions of the poem reveal their proper meaning, i.e., provide the evidence that Dantiscus composed a poetical letter addressed to Cornelis De Schepper concerning their friendship. The essay presents the data and the reasoning leading to this conclusion. |
