Document Details : Title: Juvenal in Bologna (1462) Author(s): LAUREYS, Marc Journal: Humanistica Lovaniensia Volume: 72 Date: 2023 Pages: 3-20 DOI: 10.2143/HLO.72.0.3292708 Abstract : This article offers an analysis of the interlinear and marginal notes in MS. Lat 40 of the Houghton Library (Cambridge, MA), containing the sixteen Satires of Juvenal. Particular attention is paid to the question how exactly these notes may reveal a teaching context, which would be normal to expect, given the fact that Juvenal was a popular school author. It is argued that the notes suggest that MS. Lat 40 has been a teacher's rather than a student's copy, in other words a private copy, in which a teacher penned down annotations with a view to explaining Juvenal’s text in the classroom. |
