Brandsma was intrigued by the question if the Modern Devotion is a typical expression of Dutch mysticism. Brandsma’s groundbreaking research is situated against the debate on the status of mysticism in the interbellum period. To understand Brandsma’s evaluation of the Modern Devotion, this article examines Brandsma’s definion of mysticism, in which the interplay between the divine grace and the human receptivity is quite important. This shapes his interpretation of the Modern Devotion. According to Brandsma, the Modern Devotion is a typical Northern Dutch mystical movement in which the divine grace of mystical experiences is interwoven with the human side of asceticism. |
