The nuns of this abbey wrote down his sermons on the Twelve Articles of the Christian Faith (1560/61), on the hymn Veni creator spiritus (1562), and on the Pater noster (1563) in long cycles. The twenty-seventh and last sermon of the Pater noster-cycle, that is addressed to Sister Barbara (Barbe) Tasse (1529-1598), the remarkable abbess of the abbey, and the other members of the community, can be considered as a rule of conduct. It addresses the different groups of inhabitants in ten sections – each of them connected to a verse from the Pater noster – and gives clear indications of the ‘conditions’ each of them should have, on a very practical level. This article provides an edition of this notable sermon. It is preceded by a biography of both Johannes Mahusius and Barbara Tasse, and a description of the transmission of the sermon as well as its contents. |
