Her artistic interventions in these interiors can be subtle or seemingly drastic, but they create an intriguing dynamic within that space. In March 2018 she realised an artistic intervention inside the Van Wassenhove house in Sint-Martens-Latem. This residence was built in 1972-1974 for Albert Van Wassenhove after a design by the Belgian architect Juliaan Lampens (1926-1919). Westphal created her own promenade architecturale that matched Lampens’s architecture, yet at the same time went against it. With work that was specially made on and for the site, and work that already existed but that was physically and substantively inserted, Westphal interacted with core concepts of Lampens’s thinking: architecture and physicality, a landscape folded inward, the archetypes of cave and tent, introverted and extroverted space, the dynamics of spatial relationship, the repetition of shapes, geometrical construction v. l’informe, the house as a viewing machine. |
