Largely thanks to J. Milgrom, it is widely understood as a recompense offering, a pay-back made to God. In ETL 91 I argued that, while the אשָָׁם is the appropriate cultic offering when recompense is paid to a wronged human, this is not compensation. In the wider shape of things, the choice of אשׁם for the name of the offering simply marks a match between offence and offering. The LXX translation represents a very old interpretative tradition. The translation patterns in relation to אשׁם provide a window onto the understanding and functioning of the אשׁם offering, at least for some. Compensation to God is nowhere in sight. As with the MT, the main focus is on offences which are inadvertent, temporarily not known about, or now thought better of. |
