This study suggests five different rhetorical genres for reading it: exordium (prologue), encomiastic topics to describe a character, syncrises contrasting characters, the genre narratio, and the establishment of a character’s ethos. Only a survey of rhetorical items can be presented here; each will have to be argued more fully subsequently. But omission of these rhetorical materials in current scholarship on the Prologue ignores the conventional and native ways of writing and hearing it. Rhetoric contributes to fundamental understanding. |
