This article asks if there is a 'bridegroom mysticism' to balance the bridal mysticism (Brautmystik) that was so prominent among the Beguines? To answer this question the article presents some elements from Kashmir Shaivism, an ancient Indian tradition that flourished around 1000 CE, and by the process of comparative theology brings to the fore themes and perspectives that may have gone unnoticed in Ephesians 5:15-33. On the basis of a deepened understanding of the Pauline text, the article goes on to elaborate a 'bridegroom spirituality' that can help enhance relationships between men and women and lead to a transformed attitude towards the world. |
