These major thinkers of feminist and postcolonial studies are often considered in France as peripheral authors of the phenomenological tradition. The article draws an analogy between these two authors in order to show how each of them found, in a subversive way, some tools in phenomenology that allowed them to formulate not only transcendental descriptions, but also a real social critique which leads to transform phenomenology itself, both as a method or as a field. Beauvoir and Fanon discover from their respective sides different structures of domination at the very heart of transcendental intersubjective relations. Dominated subjects, deprived of the possibility of a purely contemplative authenticity, are condemned to political engagement. |
