Document Details : Title: Mycenaean Iconography Subtitle: Dependency, Hybridity and Creativity Author(s): BLAKOLMER, Fritz Journal: Pharos Volume: 22 Issue: 1 Date: 2016 Pages: 27-47 DOI: 10.2143/PHA.22.1.3285000 Abstract : In this article the lively development of Mycenaean iconography throughout all 600 years of its history will be sketched on the basis of ten characteristic examples. The Shaft Grave period and the early Mycenaean phases clearly demonstrate the strong indebtedness of Mycenaean iconography to the artistic tradition of Neopalatial Crete. Although this conservative trend can be continuously observed in the arts of the Mycenaean palatial periods, several new tendencies can be detected as well. By the Post-Palatial period, Mycenaean iconography was orientated to new directions and even foreshadowed the warrior and funeral iconography of Geometric Greece. |
