Document Details : Title: De bijzondere metafysica van Vergote (1921-2013) Author(s): MOYAERT, Paul Journal: Tijdschrift voor Filosofie Volume: 75 Issue: 4 Date: 2013 Pages: 755-771 DOI: 10.2143/TVF.75.4.3007379 Abstract : Antoon Vergote’s understanding of philosophical anthropology, which drew heavily on Freud and Lacan, as well as his understanding of the philosophy of religion, hang together with his critique of fundamental metaphysics. It should be noted that his interest in Freud and psychoanalysis developed in dialogue with his study of phenomenology. In this essay, I discuss how Vergote criticized phenomenology, how he enriched Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic theory with ideas from existential phenomenology and how he developed a personal theory of sublimation. The central idea of his philosophy of religion was to offer a critique of any kind of natural theology; there is no direct line that leads from man to God. Rather, real religion depends on revelation. The Epiphany of the Divine, however, presupposes human nature, which makes man susceptible to the divine. A study of man can teach us what it is that makes man receptive to God. |
